Meet Cindy Howard, Creator of The Vita Pendant.
It is a pleasure having the opportunity to get to know you and to to share your gift with others on the Post Adoption Journey.
I see that you are an artist. Were you artistic even as a child?
Yes, I have always loved to create, whether it was a two room wooden fort or a ceramic piggy bank in middle school or an underwater ocean scene on my son’s walls as an adult. I have especially enjoyed communicating through clay.
Tell us alittle about the art you create and what has inspired you to create this piece?
One Mother’s Day, I asked my husband for a bag of clay. Wanting to say thank you to God for my art talent, I immediately thought of honoring life with the image of a pre-born child. I made a wall plaque that became the inspiration of the Vita pendant at the encouragement of friends and family.
I have a daughter with the middle name “Vida” which means life . Is the name “Vita” similar? What led you to choose the name “vita” for your art? I love life! I am so grateful for this gift and the redemption I have personally experienced from much devastation. After I designed and made the first pendant at silver smithing class, I began to realize that this piece of jewelry was not just for me. I learned that it, as well as the wall plaque, spoke to people’s hearts in many ways; some of celebration, some of remembrance, and some of hope. Vita is Latin for life. A word that is understood across many cultures. I want to touch hearts all over the world.
Did you realize that this piece would be a gift to those in the adoption community? As I shared this pendant with others, I became aware of its impact. My neighbor immediately wanted to give a birthstone pendant to the birth-mother of her son. I have been told that it means a great deal to her. My niece, Christina who is adopted, loves the Vita pendant and wears it proudly. The journey of the Vita pendant has been one of discovery. I am grateful to be part of its impact.
My favorite thing about your creation is that it is a tangible way for a woman who has placed a child for adoption to still have something that enables her to feel connected to her child even if they are not able to be together each day.
I love to suggest this pendant to all the couples who choose to adopt a child as a gift for their child’s birth mother.
Have you created other art or is the vita pendant something exclusive? The Vita pendant is exclusive, though it can be personalized with a birthstone and is also available in a set with a beautiful chain. Expansion is limited because of lack of time to create. I am looking for volunteers to help market, so I can design more items.
What are some of your favorite testimonials of ways your pendant has blessed others? There are so many, this is a hard question to answer. A friend of mine, Maggie, gave her Vita pendant to a young woman who was in a dire situation with an unplanned pregnancy. The pendant gave Maggie the opportunity to speak love and encouragement to this woman and she chose life for her baby! The Vita pendant was part of saving two lives! I have tears as I share this. What an honor to be part of this story.
