oday is Mother's Day, Perhaps that brings up a myr

oday is Mother's Day,
Perhaps that brings up a myriad of feelings, both good and bad.
My hope is that you have found peace and you are living with the benefits of a healthy relationship with the child you placed, knowing that at the time a decision needed to be made, you made the best choice for the future life of your child.
Yet. Maybe you're still struggling with the complexity of it all.
You might find yourself wondering if you are worthy of celebrating the day.
Heck, you might not even consider yourself a mother.
Maybe you despise the notion of yesterday being a separate day (Birth Mother's Day.) to honor women who placed a child for adoption.
Why separate it? Why have two days? Can't ALL mothers celebrate Mother's Day together on the same day?
AND While we're wondering.....
Why Birth Mother's Day? Why don't we have a National Step Mother's Day? MANY stepmothers are sacrificially and lovingly filling the role.
I offer you these thoughts....
Mothers show up in a variety of ways, and regardless of how they show up, their presence is vitally necessary and impactful.
Some are there for the long haul, some for a season, and some cheer from the sidelines. Some stand in the shadows, never knowing but always hoping and praying.
Wherever you find yourself this year, I encourage you to step into your strength this Mother's Day.
You may feel invisible, weak, and powerless, but your position is powerful and necessary.
NO ONE can fulfill the same role in the life of the child as you can.
You hold the power to be a positive and impactful presence in the life of your child. Both young and old.
You also hold the power to be a bitter and negative influence.
Big Responsibility. Worthy Outcome.
I believe there is a primal connection between mother and child, Even when you are not at your best. So, lean into that and let it guide you when you feel lost and unsure.
It's the year to let go of all of the stories, opinions, and negativity that you have acquired over the years.
It's the year to transform the guilt and shame, and it is time to start giving yourself grace, understanding, and love for having made the best decision or even surrendered to it. <3

Dear Birth Mom, If I could give you just one thin

Dear Birth Mom,

If I could give you just one thing for Birth Mother's Day this year, it would be this...

The gift of self-forgiveness with the permission to find peace around your adoption decision.

Regardless of the circumstances.

How you interpret the experience defines how you will live it out.

What you choose to make it mean "about you, about them, about it" will influence how you see your self-worth.

The one thing that you DO have control over is HOW you will respond to what took place.

When you were in a place where a decision needed to be made regarding your child's future life, you made the best decision for their future.

IN THAT MOMENT, you had no way of knowing the other stuff that came with that decision.

IN THAT MOMENT, I believe love was at the core.

We learn as we go. And we grow as we know.

As I thought about what I could share with you this year that would matter or what might have the power to help you heal, it was this.

Here is Permission to Let Go of the Guilt and Shame you are Carrying as a result of your Adoption Decision.

Permission to grieve.

Permission to allow others in.

Permission to feel peace.

Permission to forgive self and others.

Permission to feel joy.

Permission to be loved.

Permission to move forward with your child as your North Star.

May this year be the year you permit yourself to heal.

𝗚𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗳 𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗻𝗼 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝘅𝗲𝗺𝗽𝘁.

𝘞𝘦 𝘤𝘢𝘯'𝘵 𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘦, 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘦𝘯𝘫𝘰𝘺 𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘤𝘳𝘢𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘯𝘰 𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦.

Look back over your life. How many losses can you recall?
I'll go first.

𝙋𝙡𝙖𝙘𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩: I can still see the hospital doors closing on the day I left the hospital without my son.

𝑹𝒆𝒍𝒐𝒄𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏/𝑴𝒐𝒗𝒆: I remember moving from LI, NY, to Lancaster, Pa. Talk about culture shock! 𝑭𝒖𝒉𝒈𝒆𝒅𝒅𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕𝒊𝒕! From the accents to the people, places, and food. Especially Italian! Everything was different.

𝘿𝙞𝙫𝙤𝙧𝙘𝙚 I packed up the U-Haul and embarked into the wilderness where everything familiar was lost, and all was new and uncertain.

𝙁𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙚: I had an impressive nest egg. It took me years to accumulate. Circumstances took it all.

𝘾𝙝𝙪𝙧𝙘𝙝: I showed up all in for years until I experienced a personal life conflict. I sat in service while the guest speaker glared my way and addressed the "sin" in the church. I left and never looked back.

𝙋𝙚𝙩 𝙡𝙤𝙨𝙨: We came in laughing. One of those rare moments when the whole family was happy. Soon the laughter turned to tears as we discovered Sister Bear, our sweet Chihuahua, dead. Brother Bear grieved with us.

𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮 𝗳𝗲𝘄 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝘆 𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗹𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀.
𝗔𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝘆 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀, 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝗳𝗲𝘄 𝗼𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗼𝘄𝗻?

It requires bravery to look back in an attempt to move forward.

Ignoring the pain feels immediately better but never leads to FREEDOM.
Grief and I are no strangers. We go way back. We relate to each other differently now.

𝗜 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗹𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽 𝗜 𝗮𝗺 𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗱: "𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗼𝗺 𝗕𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗟𝗼𝘀𝘀."

As I grieve the ending of one chapter and welcome in the new I notice the old familiar tendency to distract myself.
